SEVERE  THUNDERSTORMS - NOVEMBER 16, 1999

Showers and thunderstorms occured over SE QLD late Tuesday afternoon, dumping hail and bringing down power lines.  Reports of up to 15 cm of hail laying on the ground were received from areas NW of Brisbane, including Dalby.  Trees were brought down throughout SE QLD taking out powerlines, with over 70 suburbs being effected by power losses at one stage!

A severe storm tore through the eastern Darling Downs causing an estimated $2 million in damges to crops!  The storm brought fierce winds and gold ball sized hail, leaving in its wake a damage path 4-7km long from Cecil Plains to Pitsworth and Clifton.  One cotton grower said his 1500 acre crop had been complete whiped out.

Strong/borderline severe storms developed in eastern parts during the late afternoon and early evening, with frequent lightning and winds gusting to 80-90km/h reported from Kallangur.

The lightning photo above was taken by Andrew Maben from the Sunshine Coast during the evening, as were the ones below.
